The new XP-640 / XP-645 printers are designed for the home user on a budget, who likes to print photographs and general documents. They replace the previous Epson Expression Premium XP630 / XP635 printer model.
The technical specifications of the older and newer models are identical. The Micro Piezo™ print heads produce a resolution of 5760 x 1440dpi using Claria™ Premium Ink. The quoted print speeds are both the same at 13 ppm Black/Grey, and 10 ppm Colour. The CIS scanning resolutions are both 1200dpi x 2400dpi. The cases are the same size, and the printers are both 6.7kg in weight. The only difference we can see between the XP630 and XP640/XP645 models is the software disc now includes Windows 10 drivers.
The older and seemingly identical XP-630 / XP-635 has achieved good feedback during the last year with an average score of 4.3/5, and we anticipate the newer XP-640/XP-645 models to achieve similar scores. Owners are guaranteed to get excellent print quality with the high resolution print heads. The machine also offers many features and benefits including Automatic duplex, Borderless print, Mobile and Cloud printing via Epson Connect (iPrint, Email Print, Remote Print Driver, Scan-to-Cloud), Apple AirPrint, and Google Cloud Print. View and print photographs directly from an SD memory card using the 6.9cm LCD screen. You can even print on to CD/DVD discs using the supplied input tray.
The Epson Expression Premium XP-640 and XP-645 printers also use the Orange 33 series ink cartridges. Unfortunately OEM Epson 33 cartridges are quite expensive at £47 for a multi-pack. The smaller black and colour cartridges each only contain 4.5ml of ink, with the larger black holding 6.4ml. Compatible replacement Orange 33xl cartridges are currently also expensive at £28 for an XL multi-pack. Refillable cartridges are not yet available.
The new Epson Expression Premium XP-640 / XP-645 machines are excellent home printers for printing photographs and documents. However, high printing costs associated with using small capacity ink cartridges have a negative impact on their overall appeal. Before we can thoroughly recommend this printer, we would like to see a reduction in the price of compatible cartridges, which are currently high due to expensive microchips.
